WRFC 2021

A Brief History of WRFC

The club was founded in 1871 by the Reverend Francis John Eld, with the first known game played against the First Worcester Artillery Corps at Somerset Place, which later became Flag Meadow.

Other grounds played on in those early years, included Pitchcroft, New Road adjacent to The County Cricket Ground, The Lodge Northwick Road and Perdiswell, with various hotels and public houses providing changing accommodation and refreshments.

The club began playing at Bevere in Worcester in 1956 and left Bevere for Sixways in 1975 when the clubhouse was opened. Finally with the formation of Worcester Warriors professional club WRFC relocated across the A4538 (Pershore Lane) to a new facility on Weston's Fields in 2017.

Worcester Wanderers

With the success of WRFC professional team and recruitment from outside the club, there was no route for many amateur players to play league rugby. Permission was granted by the RFU for a second league club to operate from Sixways. A fully amateur club entered at level 11 (lowest at the time) in 2001. The Wanderers were returned to being WRFC in 2017.

Worcester Ladies

Worcester Ladies were established in 1993 and since then the Club has gone from strength to strength, being crowned Premiership champions for the first time in their 20-year history in the 2012/13 season.
